Description

Antique French oak framed settee, sofa, couch or perhaps love seat..whatever you like to call it. Six legged base with elbow rests above. Made in the late mid 1800s I think: it's in the Louis XV style much used in many periods but this is a bit older than the common turn of the 19th century ones. Nicely shaped legs and back, with carvings along the front and on the top bar. Scrolled feet below. It's been re upholstered at some point in a floral fabric. The seat pad lifts out. Condition is fairly good structurally: we've tightened up some of the joints and there's only minimal movement now; a bit of lateral flex in the base and arms but not much. Cosmetically there are various signs of wear: some chips and dings and a few old water marks etc (see pics). Filled screwholes on some joints. Some historic woodworm in the front and one arm: no signs of life but we've treated it anyway. It's not structurally significant. The upholstery, while quite firm still, has faded on the front, especially the seat (compare the back which was probably against a wall). The fabric itself seems fairly intact, if a little worn, and the general appearance is in keeping with the age of the piece. Should you want to re upholster, it's not a complicated job as the pad lifts out and the back is accessible and fairly flat. Dimensions: 181cm x 80cm x 118cm high (seat height 50cm)
